Kenji's mother had packed his lunch every day for 18 years. When she developed dementia, she forgot many things, but she would still wake up at 5 AM and wander into the kitchen. Rather than stopping her, Kenji began waking up early to cook alongside her.

"She thinks she's still preparing my school lunch," Kenji says. "I let her guide my hands as we arrange the rice. It is my turn to ensure she feels needed and purposeful."
